Why is it that black coral is never set,?
In ” Navajo” silver jewelry? Red coral and turquoise along with pearl from abalone shells is common though.
Black coral is very soft. If it requires heat to set the stone, or to soften the prongs to hold the coral, then it would be damaged with the heat. I have a black coral ring set in gold that needs a repair. The jeweller told me that in order to do the repair, it would damage the coral because of the use of heat.
